People who have freckles sometimes struggle to accept the way they look and wish to be rid of them. Others have started a trend by applying the beauty marks on their face with the tip of liquid eyeliner. Some have freckles naturally while others have them from sun exposure. There are some ways to lighten the skin and make some of the freckles disappear. We always encourage the safe way when trying anything new when it comes to skin care. We found a few methods to help brighten and eventually make those freckles disappear.
Knowing the Difference
Before we go into the all the methods of elimination, we need to clarify the differences between freckles. Some are born with freckles while others gain them from being out in the sun and not using proper sunscreen. If your freckles are hereditary, then being out in the sun will really bring them out. The UV rays draws out the melanin in the skin and when they group together, freckles form. If you are a bit older, you may experience age spots that are a bit larger. These are generally no call for concern because it’s just a sign that you are getting older. If a spot or freckle has an odd shape or keeps growing, we’d suggest visiting a doctor, as this could be an early sign for skin cancer.
How to Get Rid of Freckles
There are quite a few methods to choose from, whether it’s the natural route or visiting a dermatologist for certain treatments that can’t necessarily be done at home. If you have been using products to help alleviate other issues such as acne or blackheads, consider waiting until your skin improves before trying to get rid of freckles. You may find that your skin will look a lot better after solving those problems.
A very popular method for lightening the skin or even the hair is using lemon juice. Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent, which is perfect for making some freckles disappear. Our recommended method is to soak a cotton ball or q-tip and then apply all over the problem areas. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then rinse with cool water. Be sure to avoid using this technique if you have any open sores or cuts as this will definitely sting. Apply this daily in order to see results. Be sure to wear sunscreen, as using this method will make you even more susceptible to the UV rays.
As you can surmise, this is a milk based face mask that can help breakdown natural freckles. The lactic acid within milk helps to peel away the top layer of the skin, which helps to make it lighter in appearance. There are many different variations to choose from, so you can find the right one for your skin type.
You make your own fruit peel by mixing crushed strawberries and kiwi into a bowl. Once you apply the mixture onto your face, let it sit for 20 minutes or until it completely dries. The fruit bonds with the skin and gently peels away the top layer of the skin, revealing a brighter complexion and less freckles. You can also use cucumbers and apricots, just be sure to keep yourself from eating them!
These creams are great for both natural and sun-related freckles. You can apply these daily for a gradual improvement. These creams generally have skin lightening ingredients like licorice extract or aloe. While you are erasing those freckles away, you’re also putting that moisture back in, avoiding further skin damage. However, be sure to read the ingredient label, because some may contain hydroquinone and oxybenzone, which can cause irritation.
Sometimes your normal exfoliator just isn’t enough. You can go into your dermatologist for this procedure or you can use certain tools at home like the Clarisonic. What happens during the process is that the top layer of the skin is sort of sanded away. These tools help to bring back the thickness of the collagen in the face. Not only does this give your face a more youthful look, but it also helps to remove the layers of skin that the freckles have affected, whether they are natural or from sun damage. You will start to see a difference after a few sessions. If you would rather do this at home and without having to buy expensive tools, there are many different products you can try.
The words “chemical” and “peel” can be a little intimidating, especially if you don’t know much about them. This process is totally safe, however, and is an effective treatment to eliminate those lighter freckles. You can also apply these to your arms and hands if you have freckles there. There are three different strengths with these peels:
Superficial: These are the mildest of peels, containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids. This peel can be used by all skin types. The superficial peel doesn’t sink too far into the skin, so it will only remove the top couple of layers. These peels usually contain glycolic acid, an acid that is pretty common in skin care.
Medium: This peel usually contains trichloraecetic acid, which penetrates deeper and removes more layers. You also don’t need as much recovery time as you would with a superficial. You can use this on any part of the body and it only takes a few minutes.
Deep: This peel is the most intense, with high concentrations of trichloraecetic acid and/or phenol to remove even more layers of skin. Besides getting rid of freckles, it can remove deep wrinkles, scars, and growths that could lead to cancer.
Generally, it’s best to take 2-3 days for the skin to heal. We suggest doing peels every so often because it can be hard on the body.
Laser treatments are done at the doctor’s office, whether it’s your dermatologist or a plastic surgeon. Before they get started, the skin is pretreated with a cooling spray so that the heat from the laser won’t hurt you. Then they point the laser right on the spots that you want to be rid of. From there, it burns the blood vessels underneath the freckles, reducing their appearance entirely. It’s common to have some temporary bruising, redness, and swelling after the procedure. The treatments are administered in 3 sessions that last between 10 and 15 minutes. Laser treatments also encourage the reboot of collagen in the face, making it easier to fade out those freckles.
What You Can do Now
These are a few options that you can try out to improve the look of your skin. We also suggest investing in prevention so you don’t get anymore. Always use a strong SPF on your skin daily to avoid more freckles from developing. Also adopting a healthy diet and dose of Vitamin C is recommended, as this vitamin has shown to have excellent benefits for the skin. Always consult your doctor before doing anything that you are unsure of. They know your skin almost as well as you do and can really help you with your journey to the skin you want. Lastly, do what you feel comfortable with. We encourage you to embrace your natural self and we also encourage you to do what you want with your skin. In the end, it’s about what makes you feel happy and confident.
