Why I needed a product like this?
As certain products literally became immune to my skin, I started to research new products and skin care trends. Since I needed to update my at home skin care routine, this was perfect timing. My biggest challenges were acne blemishes and blackheads. The blackheads were constantly staring right back at me in the mirror. These stubborn and dark blackheads became a really big issue and started to impact how often I would look at people in the face while talking. I would try to cover-up as much as possible with makeup, but the problem with heavy makeup coverage is that you are introducing more harmful chemical compounds to your skin. Besides, make-up fades after a few hours and then you’re back at square one.
Proactive was not helping with the blackheads and it started to dry my face out, leaving me flaky. To top that off, the cleanser and moisturizers are all filled with harsh chemicals. Although it contains salicylic acid, there are multiple harmful and non-natural ingredients. I needed to part ways with the blackhead and acne blemishes. I wasn’t as worried about acne as it comes and goes, but the blackheads were always staring right back at me… never, ever leaving. In my search and after talking to a couple of estheticians, I knew I needed an all-natural cleanser that would penetrate deep in to my pores without clogging them as well as something that would dry out the blackheads. This new mystery cleanser I was hunting for needed to contain salicylic acid but lacked harsh additives. Then the next mission was to avoid a cleanser that would over dryness. Through some word of mouth recommendations, I was led to Burt’s Bees. A brand I was familiar with because of their infamous chap stick, so I knew I was in good hands.
About the product/brand
Burt’s Bees has been around for a while and they have earned ‘reliable’ title because of the reliability of its products and its organic reputation. People who endure skin challenges are typically searching for fast and long-term solutions. Burt’s Bees produce naturally infused products that work beyond the surface and produce no harm if used long term. I have noticed with most of their products, they incorporate natural ingredients that really penetrate deep into your skin and you can expect a scent and texture that remind you of nature.
Uses and effects
I started with using this gel cleanser 3 times a week, since, my skin is combination (not oily not dry), it didn’t dry me out. I started to see results- the acne started to clear up within 1 week and by the end of the week I noticed that whiteheads were gone. The blackheads on my nose were starting to dry out, it was a good step in the right direction. The first time I washed my face with this cleanser, I used a blackhead strip after to see how easily and how much would be extracted. I left the strip on for a few minutes, after peeling it off, almost every single blackhead was gone.
Following that first session, I used two more times in the morning. I would pour out a dime-sized amount, and rub my hands together to get the consistency activated. Massaging it into my skin, especially around my nose and chin where the blackheads are the most stubborn, and continued with a circular motion for at least 30 seconds. You want allow the acid time to penetrate. It lathers nicely, and the lather is very creamy. When you are ready to rinse, make sure you rinse with cool water, and even though you might want to rub your face dry, don’t! Ensure that you pat it dry.
The cleanser is great for maintenance once you start seeing the results. After my skin cleared up and the blackheads were going and staying away, I decreased the amount of times I was using it. I went from using it 3 times a week, down to 2 times a week (with a few days in between each wash).
Formulation/ Main Ingredients/ Packaging
The cleanser comes in a 5 oz. bottle and has a thin consistency, which contains 1% salicylic acid. Salicylic acid reduces acne and helps prevent future breakouts. It also has evening primrose and beet-root extracts to help soothe skin, and reduces any redness and irritation.
I’ve always liked Burt Bees’ brand, and upon finding out that this cleanser is non-comedogenic, which means it’s specially formulated so that it doesn’t block or clog your pores, made me even more excited about the cleanser.
What I Like about Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions
I love that this cleanser gives you close to immediate results. It is no overnight miracle, but it work in getting rid of acne and drying out anything else that is no supposed to be living on your face. Unlike the majority of cleansers, this does not leave your face overly dry. I used a light moisturizer especially during the summer. It is a light cleanser with a light, natural scent containing no harsh parabens or sulfates – leaving you with about 99% natural ingredients. This cleanser is safe enough to have my teen sister use, as she is experiencing her first round of acne breakouts and blackheads.
What I Don’t I Like about Burt’s Bees Natural Acne Solutions
I didn’t love the fact that the container is not leak proof; it should have come with a pump dispenser. It makes it challenging to travel with it, even for a road trip. I had to purchase travel and sample size containers to take it with me.
My Final Verdict
If you have makeup on your face use a makeup remover prior to using the cleanser. It doesn’t remove makeup thoroughly. This is perfect for people who have mild acne or looking for a maintenance regimen. This might not be the best solution if you have moderate to severe acne, cystic acne or resilient skin.
